As an Actress, Singer and Dancer on stages for years who previously had Stage Fright, I think I can help answer a few questions about facing fear and anxiety. Performing may seem like a task only made by super humans, who seemingly get on stage and don't show any fear and seem to be having a great time. Well, there's your first remedy. Let's get to it.
1. Try to have fun.
Just go with it! You can only be as good as you are. Or wait can you? Well, that tip is down below. First things first. You've got to have the guts to do it. Don't forget performing is fun. Anything that's exhilarating is a little nerve-wracking at first, but ultimately it's something you'll have fun doing. Anything that we're having fun doing is typically exciting with a touch of fear, but fairly easy to do, right? It's just those first times that throw you for a loop. Just try to live in this excitement, embrace the fear and then enjoy the moment, because it's an opportunity that leads to fun, and because once you get the hang of it you will have fun! Jump ahead to the fun part.
2. Don't take yourself too seriously.
Sometimes we're so worried about what other people might think that we try too hard to be good. Just do what you came to do, and then be done. Don't worry too much about the end result. Don't try to be something you're not. You're new, and that's ok, so don't worry how other people feel about it either. Have you ever heard the saying, live in the moment? Well, that's the secret. Just get up and do what you do and don't care much about being good or bad. Don't think about what other people are thinking and feeling, because then in that moment you're not in the moment. Get it? If you're in the moment worrying about what they're thinking then you can't be performing and enjoying the moment, or doing a very good job. Be in the moment. Don't think outside of what you're actually doing or how good or bad you are. You are performing! Just perform.
3. Know your worth.
The fact is that you're the one on the stage. Not very many people can get up and do that. They don't even have the courage, let alone the talent. Remember that you have something to share or you wouldn't be there. You have a gift, and you'd like to share it wouldn't you? Once you do share it, you will get loads of compliments. Maybe you'll only get one compliment, but next time you'll get more. Don't get distraught if there was someone better than you. There will always be someone better than you and someone worse than you, forever! The fact is that you did it and you'll get better each time. Don't forget you can't get better unless you actually do it. Share what you have to give. You are special. Know your worth.
4. Don't compare yourself to others.
You see people who are much better and more experienced, and that can be intimidating. You absolutely are in a different place than that "more qualified" person, but the only way you will get better at it is to be fearless and do it. Care less about what others think and get better by continuing to do it. One day there will be someone wishing they knew how to do it as good as you. You might even have someone who feels that way about you right now! We are all just where we are in this world of ours. What holds us back is our silly beliefs that we're not good enough, or as good as someone else. Let yourself shine. Don't compare just share. You be you!
5. Act like someone else if you don't think you can do it.
If the fear is just too unbearable my favorite tip is to create a bit of a fantasy and act as your favorite star. This does two things; First, it makes you a bit more fearless because you can step into another persona and feel like it's not you up there. Second, it makes you look better on a stage to emulate someone that you admire, because after all whatever they have, is IT! You think they are awesome, so if you can pull off an ounce of their star quality, while still being you, you will have more to give. If you can give the kind of flare that someone famous does, then you have taken yourself to the next level by doing what they do. ** FOR MORE ABOUT STAGE FRIGHT
